"Come to my heart" by John Sayers

Aflame, but at the center we stand--home together, chest to beating chest.

My Dearest Friend,

Here's a poem I wrote several years ago, while thinking about my hopes for a future spouse and soulmate. If you enjoy it, please feel free to share it with others!

Come to my heart;
You’ll find it bramble-bound.
Ringed round with hurts and cares,
A solitude, constrained, and bound--
Who dares to travel there?

There is a path, keen eyes can spy,
But only if they view the landscape
Upside-down, or inside-out. Uncommon
Vision sprung from selfless suffering,
A light, a way, a cross, a path to me.

Me, worth the pain of such a path?
Worth patience, care, untangling?
Worth handling?

Handling a heart on fire to love,
Awakened, quickened, pounding…
Exploding! Setting all but all aflame.

Aflame, but at the center we stand,
Home together, chest to beating chest.
In reckless peacefulness, and undistressed.

Undistressed, and we can see for miles,
No nettles left to block the way.
Together we can wander forth
In wonderment, to light of day.

Come to my heart.
